Living traditions

Traditions & Values

Pastoral Heritage

Cattle sit at the center of Banyamulenge livelihood, identity, and memory in the South Kivu highlands.

Herding traditions shaped daily life on the high plateaus: patience with animals, care for grazing land, and respect for the seasons that feed the herds. Cattle naming and the social meaning of livestock ownership remain part of how Congolese highland families talk about belonging.

Even for diaspora households far from Mulenge, stories of grandparents' herds and highland pastures keep pastoral heritage alive — a living link between Congolese land, work, and who we are.

Community & Elders

Councils of elders guide decisions that affect the whole community.

Respect for age, wisdom, and lineage structures social relations and conflict resolution. Elders teach history, settle disputes, and remind younger generations what unity and loyalty look like in practice.

Listening to elders is not only courtesy — it is how oral history, values, and kinship knowledge move from one generation to the next, in South Kivu and abroad.

Music & Dance

Song, drum, and dance mark the moments that hold a community together.

Weddings, harvests, and gatherings fill with traditional songs and dances that celebrate joy and endurance — including forms like Haya Haya. These performances carry stories that written pages alone cannot hold.

Diaspora communities keep the same spirit alive at cultural events worldwide — teaching children rhythms and lyrics so distance does not erase memory of home in the DRC.

Faith and fellowship that hold us together

Faith & Community

Churches and shared faith have become centers of worship, learning, and mutual support.

Christian faith plays a significant role in community life, especially through periods of displacement and hardship. Congregations organize education, aid, and fellowship when Congolese families are scattered.

Faith communities often become the place where language, hospitality, and hope are practiced together — stitching South Kivu and the diaspora into one extended family.
