Up in the clouds
The Banyamulenge homeland sits high above sea level — often around 2,000 meters — in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cool weather, misty mornings, and green grass suited cattle pastoralism for generations of Congolese highland families.

Minembwe — the heart
Minembwe is one of the most important places in our homeland. It is a wide, fertile plateau where families have lived for generations. Cattle graze on the hills, and communities gather to make decisions together.

The Itombwe Mountains
To the east rise the Itombwe Mountains — tall, forested peaks full of wildlife. These mountains protect the highlands and have shaped how people travel, farm, and raise animals for centuries.
